The ongoing salmonella outbreaks that have taken grip this summer have now reached dogs.
Oma’s Pride, a raw pet food brand based in Avon, Connecticut, has issued a voluntary recall on 639 bags of its Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe due to salmonella contamination.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it received a consumer complaint about the product, tested it, and found it tested positive for salmonella, according to a recall notice shared on Monday, August 17. Oma’s Pride is investigating the source.
So far, there have been three reports of dogs experiencing illness, the notice states. The announcement also warns that humans could contract salmonella infections when handling the impacted foods.
Fast Company reached out to Oma’s Pride for additional comment. The pet food brand is owned by Miller Foods.
This year has seen brands like Kroger and Utz face salmonella outbreaks, with one notable outbreak being linked to jalapeño peppers and impacting numerous retailers in states across the country.

The dog food recall is limited to the Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe, 6 lb bag. The stand-up pouch is made up of 12 different 8-oz vacuum-sealed portions of food. Here are the identifying points to look out for:

What should I do if I have this product?
Immediately stop giving your dog any impacted bag of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe. Oma’s Pride warns against selling or donating the product and says to throw it out.
“Wash and sanitize pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers,” the notice states. “Always ensure you wash and sanitize your hands after handling recalled food or any utensils that have come into contact with it.”

What salmonella symptoms should I look out for in my dog?
According to the FDA release, pets with salmonella infections can exhibit symptoms such as:
- Lethargy
- Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Decreased appetite
- Abdominal pain
The announcement warns that “infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.”
