    Key Takeaways

    • Being discoverable online is no longer about your business showing up on page one of Google search rankings — that’s the old way.
    • Now, thanks to AI search, it’s about making sure your brand story is consistent across all platforms, whether it’s your website, your LinkedIn page or even Reddit threads.

Ask ChatGPT what your company does, then ask Perplexity, then Gemini. If you’re like most of the founders I talk to, you’ll get three different answers, and at least one of them will be wrong.

That should worry you more than your keyword rankings do. For 20 years, being found online meant showing up on page one of Google. Business owners obsessed over titles, meta descriptions and backlinks, because that was the game. Today, the game has changed and most people are still playing the old one.

AI models are quietly becoming the first stop for research, comparison and recommendation, and they’re forming opinions about your brand right now, based on whatever scraps of information they can find across the web. Not what’s on your homepage. Not what you’d tell a customer yourself. Whatever’s out there, however outdated or incomplete it happens to be.

Run the mirror test on your own brand

Here’s the exercise I give every client before we talk strategy. Open three AI tools and ask each one the same set of questions. What does this company do, who is it for and how does it compare to its two biggest competitors? Then read the answers side by side.

Most business owners are stunned by what comes back. Product lines that were discontinued years ago show up as flagship offerings; a competitor gets credited with a positioning statement that’s actually yours, pricing is wrong, locations are wrong and sometimes the tool confidently describes a company that doesn’t resemble yours at all.

This isn’t a glitch you can report to a help desk. It’s the natural result of a model piecing together your identity from fragments — some current, some years old, some written by people who never used your product. Those fragments get scattered across your website, a handful of press mentions, old directory listings, review sites and whatever conversations about you happen to exist on Reddit or LinkedIn. The model blends them into an average of everything ever said about you, weighted by how much a machine could crawl and parse.

Look past your own website for the real signals

The instinct is to fix this the old way. Rewrite the about page, add more keywords and publish another blog post. None of that addresses the actual problem, which is that AI models draw the overwhelming majority of what they say about you from sources you don’t own and can’t directly edit.

That reframes what actually counts as brand infrastructure. A Wikipedia entry, if your company has one, carries more weight than most executives assume. The accuracy of your LinkedIn presence and third-party directory listings matters just as much as the specificity of the reviews your customers leave, since a detailed account of a real problem you solved outweighs a generic five-star rating with no substance behind it. Trade press deserves the same scrutiny. A single outdated feature can outrank your own website in a model’s eyes for years, simply because it was written with more authority than anything you’ve published since.

If a model rarely visits your site directly and instead builds its picture of you from secondary sources, those secondary sources are your new front door, whether you’ve invested in them or not. Most founders have never audited what those sources actually say.

Treat consistency as the new distribution channel

I’ll be blunt about where I land on this. Most companies still treat their digital footprint as a collection of separate channels, each with its own owner and its own inconsistent version of the brand story. That structure made sense when a human was reading one page at a time. It falls apart when a machine is synthesizing all of it at once and presenting the blend as fact.

The fix isn’t glamorous. Pick the handful of facts that matter most — what you do, who you serve and what makes you different — and make sure that story is aligned everywhere it appears, from your own site to your press mentions to your partner pages to your team’s LinkedIn profiles. Update the old interviews and outdated bios you can still control. Ask happy customers to describe specifically what problem you solved for them, not just that they liked working with you, because specificity and novelty are what get pulled into an AI summary.

None of this is about gaming an algorithm. It’s about closing the gap between the business you actually run and the version of it that’s currently circulating in systems you don’t control. Right now, that gap is wider than most founders realize, and it’s growing every time someone asks an AI tool a question about your industry and gets an answer that leaves you out or gets you wrong.

The companies that close that gap early won’t just be more visible. They’ll be the ones the machines recommend to potential customers, prompting for your solution, and, in a zero-click world, will create the “winner takes all” dynamic, which is remarkably hard to dislodge.
