Amazon-owned Whole Foods has joined the list of grocers that are recalling select jalapeño products amid an ongoing Salmonella outbreak that has sickened hundreds and hospitalized dozens.
Here’s what you need to know about the outbreak and Whole Foods’ long list of recalled products.
What’s happened?
Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began publishing updates on their investigations into an ongoing Salmonella outbreak believed to have begun earlier this summer.
According to the CDC, that outbreak has now sickened at least 345 people as of August 10. Worse, 36 of those individuals have required hospitalization.
The agency’s data show that the first known cases associated with the outbreak occurred in mid-June and cases rapidly increased throughout July.
The outbreak is now known to have infected people who live in more than half the states in the country, 27 in total. The hardest hit states so far include Colorado and Minnesota, with 110 cases each.
A map produced by the CDC shows cases have impacted states in almost every region of the country.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious illness and even death in those infected.
People who are particularly vulnerable to a Salmonella infection include the very young, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems or other health conditions.
Jalapeño peppers are believed to be source
The CDC and FDA say that the source of the outbreak is jalapeño peppers sourced from Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.
As Fast Company previously reported, the jalapeños were originally known to have been distributed to restaurants and fast-casual chains, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba. But at the time, the FDA said it was still examining whether any impacted jalapeños made it into grocery stores.
But on August 9, food manufacturer Taylor Fresh Foods announced a voluntary recall of 20 of its products that contain jalapeño peppers after the company identified the products as having jalapeños that originated from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, that provides the peppers to Coast Citrus Distributors.
The products included in Taylor Fresh Foods’ recall include those distributed to grocery chains such as Hannaford, Kroger, Stop and Shop, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Whole Foods.
But now, Whole Foods itself has announced a recall of its own, targeting more than 40 products containing jalapeño peppers.
List of Whole Foods jalapeño pepper products being recalled
On August 12, the FDA published a recall notice from Whole Foods, announcing a voluntary recall of 43 products over fears those products may contain jalapeños sourced from Coast Citrus Distributors.
The products were sold by Whole Foods online and in Whole Foods stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin.
The company says it currently has no reports that the affected products have caused illness in anyone.

What should I do if I have the recalled products?
Consumers are urged to carefully read the recall notice posted on the FDA’s website for complete details about the recall.
Whole Foods says those who have purchased the products should not consume them. Instead, the products should be discarded.
Alternatively, consumers can also return the recalled products to any Whole Foods store if they still have a valid receipt.
