Last week, Starbucks Coffee Company announced it would close around 250 stores in North America. That’s a cull of 1% of its roughly 18,000 locations in the region.
However, the coffee giant did not disclose a list of which specific locations would close. But thanks to some media reports and Reddit sleuths, we now have a much clearer idea of the affected stores. Here’s what you need to know.
What’s happened?
As Fast Company reported last week, Starbucks Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams announced on Thursday that the coffee chain would close “approximately 250 coffeehouses later this week.”
Grams said the closures were because the company did not believe the doomed locations could achieve “a path to acceptable financial performance.” The COO also said the stores could not “consistently deliver the experience we want for customers.”
The announcement was no doubt a shock to many Starbucks employees, but it also created uncertainty because Starbucks did not provide a list of locations that would be closing.
This likely left many staff and customers wondering, “Is my store on the closing list?”
Four days after the announcement, Starbucks still hasn’t released a list of closing locations, but since Grams said the closures would happen last week, it’s been relatively easy for the media and some clever Reddit sleuths to piece together their own lists of stores that were part of the cull.
As of Monday, the store closures now appear to be reflected on Google and in Starbucks’s own store locator tool.
List of closing Starbucks locations
NBC affiliate KGW8 in Portland, Oregon, was one of the first to publish a list of stores swept up in the Starbucks closures last week. The news outlet it has confirmed closures in 33 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada.
The hardest-hit regions are California with 43 closures, and New York, with 16 closures.

In addition to KGW8’s list of closing stores, another list of shuttered locations has popped up on Reddit. Compiled by Reddit user WhoNeedsRAM, this list was created by combing Starbucks ’ store data and noting every location that was listed as closed between Sunday and Tuesday.
However, the Redditor cautions, “don’t take this as gospel. It’s picking up on a pattern in posted hours, not pulling from some official closure list.” Still, while there are some discrepancies between the Reddit list and KGW8’s, the majority of the locations on both lists match.
One particularly helpful thing about the Reddit list is that it includes an accompanying interactive map that visually shows the likely closed locations.
What the closures mean for Starbucks employees
Unfortunately, Starbucks closing store locations in North America isn’t anything new.
Just last year, the company also announced it would close about 1% of its then-existing stores in the region, leaving the company with around 18,300 locations at the end of its fiscal year.
As Fast Company previously reported, those closures were part of CEO Brian Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” turnaround strategy, which includes making Starbucks stores more welcoming to guests and reversing declining sales.
But store closures inevitably hurt the people who worked hard to run those stores. Last Week, COO Grams said Starbucks will try to transfer affected employees to other roles where possible. Those who can’t be moved to other stores will receive severance.
However, it’s unclear how many Starbucks employees will permanently lose their jobs because of these closures.
Fast Company has reached out to Starbucks for confirmation of the closing locations, as well as the number of employees who are being let go. We’ll update this post if we hear back.
Shares of Starbucks Corporation (Nasdaq: SBUX) have risen slightly over the last trading day, up 1.29%, although they were basically flat in premarket trading on Monday. The stock has performed roughly in line with the broader S&P 500 this year, up 12.97% year to date as of Friday’s close.
