    The Return of Healey.

After an endless string of scandals and crises, what finally drove the Labour party to dump failing Keir Starmer as leader and premier was the resignation of then-Defense Minister John Healey over Starmer’s and Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ inability or unwillingness to fully fund the Defense Investment Plan, forcing him to compromise national security and military readiness.

But incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham appears to have preempted this whole dispute by appointing Healey as the new Chancellor, seemingly guaranteeing funding for the military, and sending defense stocks soaring.

    The New York Times reported:

“Andy Burnham, Britain’s new prime minister, on Monday named John Healey as his chancellor of the Exchequer, a critical cabinet post overseeing the country’s finances and helping execute his vision to spread economic growth across the country.

Mr. Healey was recently defense secretary under the former government, though he resigned last month because he said the Treasury had not funded the military adequately. Little is known about Mr. Healey’s latest broad economic views. The role of chancellor is one of the most consequential in the British government, controlling how much money other government departments are given to spend and invest. The office and official residence [are located] at No. 11 Downing Street, next door to the prime minister’s.”

“John Healey, can the party unite behind Burnham? Is it a nest of singing birds?”

    The Guardian reported:

“UK defense stocks rally as former defense secretary appointed chancellor. The UK’s blue-chip FTSE 100 index has opened slightly lower this morning, down 0.3% – but some of its biggest defense stocks are rallying amid excitement that a former defense secretary now occupies No 11.

Babcock International is up 4%, while BAE Systems is up 2.4%. Over in the FTSE 250, Qinetiq is up 3.5%.

Investors are hoping that chancellor John Healey will use his new position to increase defense spending – possibly though issuing “defense bonds”, a form of borrowing allocated only for the military which he has previously advocated for in government.”

‘Politically not a bad choice, but the problem is the economics.’
