Woke Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is now proposing a ballot referendum that would seek financial compensation and “reparations” for communities impacted by recent ICE immigration raids in the city. The referendum, overwhelmingly approved by the City Council, asks voters whether Chicago should pursue “all lawful means” to recover money from the federal government for economic harms caused by the Trump administration’s militarized ICE operation known as “Operation Midway Blitz.”

During a recent council meeting and press remarks, Johnson said he believes “the most relevant ballot referendum question” is about receiving reparations for communities that “experienced that hardship,” citing examples including a Black man placed in “an illegal chokehold” and “long guns being stuck into the faces of women and children, zip‑tied and thrown into vehicles.” He described residents in affected neighborhoods as having been “kidnapped, shot at” and subjected to tear gas and other aggressive tactics, arguing that his updated policy is intended to create “a pathway to accountability” consistent with earlier executive orders protecting illegal alien communities and so-called protesters.

Johnson has previously condemned ICE enforcement tactics in Chicago as deceptive and abusive, accusing the Trump administration of “attempting to get us to surrender our humanity” and vowing that “in Chicago, we will not comply” with such operations. Under the proposed referendum, Johnson says Chicago would seek compensation for costs such as lost tax revenue, public safety responses and services provided to residents and families affected by ICE raids, while exploring localized reparations for those directly impacted.

Johnson’s broader reparations agenda has also drawn fierce backlash online, with MAGA‑aligned users previously denouncing his separate slavery‑related reparations task force as “outright racism” and “illegal,” suggesting his latest proposal tied to ICE raids will face similarly intense opposition by Americans that are fed up with illegal immigration.
