Fireworks, BBQs, parades . . . oh my! The biggest summer holiday in America is extra special this year, as this Fourth of July marks the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. This means it is essentially a huge milestone birthday for the nation.

Since the big day falls on a Saturday this year, many organizations will observe it on Friday, July 3. What is open and closed under these circumstances can be confusing, so read on to find out where to grab some last-minute sunscreen.

What exactly does the Fourth of July celebrate?

The Fourth of July celebrates the day the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence.

This document, written by Thomas Jefferson, proclaimed that the 13 American colonies were no longer under the thumb of Great Britain. King George III was not thrilled, and tried to dismiss the document as an act of rebellion. Despite this, other governments, including those of France, Spain, and the Netherlands, would recognize American independence.

Is July 3 a federal holiday?

The Fourth of July is the federal holiday. When this falls on a weekend, it is observed on July 3 by the federal government.

Are banks and ATMs open on July 3?

Yes. Most banks will remain open on July 3, and will observe the holiday on the Fourth. (However, it is always a good practice to check ahead so you don’t waste any time.) The Federal Reserve is open on July 3, but the Board of Governors will close.

ATMs will be available on July 3. Those outside of bank locations will also be available on the Fourth. Online banking is always available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Is the post office open on July 3?

Yes. Post offices will be open to sell you a stamp or ship important items to customers or loved ones. The U.S. Postal Service will also celebrate Independence Day on the actual holiday.

Is mail delivered on July 3?

Yes. Mail will be delivered on July 3. It will not be delivered on the Fourth. Normal operations will resume on Monday, July 6.

Are FedEx and UPS delivering on July 3?

FedEx will be delivering under modified hours and service. UPS will be operating as well. The only exception to UPS service is Air and Ocean Freight Services, which will be closed for the day.

Are stock markets open on July 3?

No. You cannot buy or sell stocks on July 3. Both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq will be closed for business.

Are schools open on July 3?

Most schools are already out for summer vacation. Many summer programs will take July 3 off. Be sure to double-check with your child’s institution, because it will depend on how they choose to observe the holiday.

Are restaurants open on July 3?

Yes. Most restaurants will be open, and would welcome your business. Olive Garden will be available with unlimited breadsticks. Chili’s will have ribs, so you don’t have to BBQ your own. To avoid the risk of getting “hangry,” double-check your favorite spot before you head out.

Are grocery stores open on July 3?

Yes. You can shop for all your hot dog and hamburger needs ahead of your BBQ, on July 3. Costco, however, will be closed on Independence Day.

Are retail stores open on July 3?

Yes. Most retail stores will be open for business. Target and Walmart will be open, if you need extra flip-flops or sunscreen.

Are pharmacies open on July 3?

Yes. Most pharmacies will be open to fill your prescriptions.

What television specials are happening on July 3?

Television networks will be celebrating America all weekend.

If you want to get things started on Friday, PBS’s A Capitol Fourth: 250th Weekend Celebration will premiere at 8 p.m. ET.

Over on CNN, Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen will count down to the Fourth just like it’s New Year’s Eve, with Independence Eve Live beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
