Unwell, the company cofounded by social media powerhouse Alex Cooper, has remained self-funded and profitable since its launch in August of 2023. Yet on Wednesday, it was announced that investment firm WTSL has become the company’s first outside investor, with Unwell now valued at $500 million.

Run by Cooper and her husband, Matt Kaplan, the media and lifestyle startup is known for its slate of podcasts, such as the infamous Call Her Daddy, as well as its wellness drinks and TV and movie production.

Cooper is also known for her large social media presence, and Kaplan for his role in media production.

The brand broke its streak of no outside investors, according to the Hollywood Reporter, after accepting an offer of an undisclosed amount from popular talent agent Patrick Whitesell, CEO of WTSL.

The investment firm is backed by private equity firm Silver Lake, led by Jason Lublin. It also works with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and the Universal Music Group.

Funding follows controversy and public feuds

The announcement comes two months after Kaplan was accused of creating a toxic work environment and making uncomfortable comments toward employees in an article for Vanity Fair. A representative told the outlet that the claims were “false and outrageous.”

Cooper has also been in a public feud with influencer Alix Earle in recent months, and her conflict with ex-cohost Sofia Franklyn has reappeared in the public eye.

WTSL and Unwell plan on using this investment to help the Unwell brand grow, including through acquisition. The firm will also work to expand the network’s video and consumer business, and lend its expertise and industry relationships.
