Save A Lot supermarkets are vital for food access in many of the communities they serve, providing an array of discounted goods in low-income, urban, and rural areas where grocery stores might otherwise be scarce.

But Save A Lot locations have been disappearing at an unsettling rate, with store closures impacting dozens of communities across at least 13 states this year alone, a Fast Company review has found.

Some states, including Florida, Ohio, and New York, have seen multiple Save A Lot locations shutter in 2026.

While some of these closures have been well publicized, such as the closure of several Chicago-based stores owned by grocer Yellow Banana—which followed the death of Yellow Banana’s CEO in April—others have flown relatively under the radar outside of localized chatter on social media.

Reached for comment by Fast Company, a Save A Lot spokesperson characterized the closures as routine.

“Store closures and re-openings occur regularly in the grocery industry,” Save A Lot said in an emailed statement. “Save A Lot has focused our efforts on stores in core markets and regions where we are able to sustainably support operations and continue providing nutritious, quality food access for the communities we serve.”

Which Save A Lot stores have closed?

According to our review of local media reports, online review platforms, and Save A Lot’s own store locator tool, over two dozen Save A Lot stores have closed this year so far in at least 13 states.

Some of these closures have been quite recent, with a few addresses still appearing on the store locator tool as of Monday. The stores below are likely not a complete list.

Save A Lot did not respond to a question about whether more store closures are expected this year. We will update this story with new locations as we learn about them.

Why are Save A Lot stores closing?

Save A Lot’s trend of store closures has been going on for a few years. Its annual report for 2025 showed it had 650 locations, compared with 727 locations a year earlier.

As reported by Grocery Dive on Monday, this decline follows a trend that had been ongoing since at least 2020. The report cites research from data science company Dunnhumby showing that Save A Lot has struggled with brand perception in terms of affordability, losing ground to competitors such as Aldi and Walmart.

Why grocery store closures are a problem

Scholars have long warned about a slow-growing crisis of food deserts—areas in which low-income consumers lack access to fresh food—which not only create additional hardships but lead to negative health impacts and make inequality worse.

Earlier this year, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance produced an extensive map of food deserts that visualizes the extent of the problem. The nonprofit largely blames marketplace consolidation, as well as a landscape where corporate giants like Walmart, Amazon, and The Kroger Co. control an outsize share of people’s grocery shopping options.

Save A Lot’s model is different in that its chain is largely operated by independent grocers, which the company calls “retail partners.” But those partnerships seem to be on the wane along with Save A Lot’s store count. The company said it had 149 retail partners in 2025, down from 169 a year earlier.
