University of Maryland School of Pharmacy professor Berhanu Kibret was arrested by ICE for overstaying his visa

A University of Maryland (UMD) professor was arrested by ICE last month at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport two weeks ago, sparking more outrage from the left-wing media.

Despite being here illegally, he’s received the title of the “teacher of the year” who was detained by ICE.

Berhanu Kibret, an Ethiopian professor at the UMD School of Pharmacy, was in the US illegally on an overstayed visa, which expired in May 2024, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

According to the University, he was “returning from a meeting of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, where he received a Teacher of the Year award” at the time of his arrest.

The university said they were “greatly troubled” and that “Kibret has a valid Work Authorization, so it is our hope that any issues surrounding his status will be quickly resolved,” according to CBS.

However, the Department of Homeland Security described Kibret as an “illegal alien from Ethiopia” in a statement.

“Geresu Kibret entered the country on June 21, 2021, on a visa set to expire on May 31, 2024. Against our nation’s laws, he overstayed his visa and failed to depart. He will remain in ICE custody pending his immigration proceedings,” DHS said, noting that “being in detention is a choice.”

“We encourage all illegal aliens to take control of their departure with the CBP Home App. The United States is offering illegal aliens $2,600 and a free flight to self-deport now.”

UMD said in a statement, “Dr. Kibret is a highly valued member of the University of Maryland, Baltimore community,” describing him as “an effective and beloved teacher, and a highly regarded colleague.”

“His detention has generated not only great sympathy for his plight, but also a heightened sense of apprehension here on campus,” they added.

This follows news that a Johns Hopkins University researcher from Cameroon was detained while boarding a flight at Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport on July 28. The Cameroon native, Fatima Ameaka, was later released from custody.

    More from CBS Baltimore:

This comes as federal officials say ICE recorded the single highest number of immigration related arrests in one month during July.

    Fox’s Bill Melugin reported,

NEW: Per multiple federal sources, ICE made roughly 51,000 immigration arrests during the month of July, an average of 1,645 per day and the highest single month of arrests the agency has ever recorded. This comes after ICE made roughly 43,000 arrests in the month of June, which was record setting at the time.

Bottom line, ICE has now notched back to back months of their highest arrest totals in agency history after a brief dip in the numbers in the aftermath of Minneapolis and the DHS shutdown.

Thousands of new ICE hires are hitting the streets, and the agency’s coffers are plush with billions in cash after two reconciliation bills to fund them during Trump’s second presidency.
