While everyone knows that July 4 is a federal holiday, this year that holiday was officially observed yesterday, on July 3. That’s because today, July 4, 2026, falls on a Saturday, when most federal offices are closed anyway.

But of course, Americans across the nation will be celebrating the 250th birthday of their country today—and many businesses and non-governmental organizations will be closed in honor of the celebrations.

Here’s what you can expect to be open and closed on July 4, 2026.

Are banks open on July 4?

No, most banks, including the national giants like Bank of America, Chase, Citi, and Wells Fargo, will be closed.

But as always, banks’ online services should be operating as normal.

Are ATMs open on July 4?

Yeah, you can expect ATMs to be operating as normal. However, on busy holiday weekends, people may turn to these ATMs more than usual, which can deplete their cash reserves. If you are going to need Benjamins on July 4, it’s better to hit up an ATM sooner rather than later.

Is the post office open on July 4?

No, branches of the United States Postal Service (USPS) will not be open on July 4, according to the agency.

Is mail delivered on July 4?

No, the UPSP will not be delivering mail on July 4.

Are FedEx and UPS operating on July 4?

Private delivery services may have some operations on July 4.

While UPS says it will have no pickup or delivery service on July 4, it only advises that its store locations “may be closed.” UPS says to check with your local store to confirm whether it is open.

FedEx says that its FedEx and FedEx Logistics services will be closed on July 4. However, it says its FedEx Custom Critical service will be open, and that its FedEx Office locations may have modified hours or be closed. It’s best to check with your local FedEx Office location directly to see whether they are open on July 4.

Is the stock market open on July 4, 2026?

No. Since July 4 falls on a Saturday, US stock markets are already closed. This includes the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Are schools open on July 4?

As July 4 is a Saturday this year, any school which is normally closed on a Saturday during the summer should be closed today, too.

Are restaurants open on July 4?

Most major restaurant chains will be open on July 4. This includes the major fast-food chains like Arby’s, Burger King, IHOP, KFC, McDonald’s, Subway, Taco Bell, and Wendy’s.

But note that chains also let franchises set their own store hours and opening times. It’s possible that some chain fast food restaurants may be closed due to their owner’s holiday operating preferences.

Are grocery stores open on July 4?

Most major grocery store chains should remain open on July 4, although they may operate under an altered holiday schedule. This includes Aldi, Kroger, Safeway, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods.

Check with your local grocery store for details on their holiday operations.

Are retail stores open on July 4?

Many will be, but their hours may be modified. While it’s always best to call ahead to see if your local retailer is open, most major big box stores, including Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, Target, and Walmart, should be.

The big exception is Costco, which says it will be closed on Independence Day.

Are pharmacies open on July 4?

In an unexpected move, America’s major pharmacy chain, Walgreens, announced it will have 4,000 pharmacy locations open on July 4, rather than just the retail portions of the stores as in past years (via Fast Company’s sister site, Inc.).

Many CVS pharmacy locations may be open, too, but operating under reduced holiday hours.

As with other types of stores, it’s best to call ahead to make sure the pharmacy is open before heading there.
