New Zealand Navy Commander Yvonne Gray.

Hiring DEI captains has a steep price.

The wreck of the HMNZS Manawanui became the day’s controversy about a year ago.

One of only nine New Zealand Navy Vessels, it sank off the coast of Samoa after hitting a reef.

The female lesbian captain of the ship, Yvonne Gray, was mercilessly trolled online for having lost the ship, prompting the defense minister of the country – also a woman, Judith Collins – to come out to the public with a strong statement.

Taking a page from the feminist book, she was focused on bashing ‘vile and misogynistic online remarks’ by ‘armchair admirals’.

However, the government inquiry showed that Gray’s crew ‘had mistakenly left the vessel on autopilot’ during the failed maneuver that led to the sinking of the boat.

    Not a great look.

New Zealand Navy ship Manawanui caught fire and sank in the Pacific Ocean

Today, it arises that New Zealand’s government has paid Samoa 10m Samoan Tala ($3,5m) after the crash into a reef in Samoan waters led to a fire and sinking of the Manawanui last year.

    BBC reported:

“HMNZS Manawanui started leaking oil into the ocean after it sunk, with reports of sea turtles dying and slicks appearing on nearby Samoan beaches.

New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the payment had been made at Samoa’s request.

HMNZS Manawanui was the first ship New Zealand lost at sea since World War Two. It was one of nine ships in the country’s small naval fleet, and had been surveying an area of sea floor that had not been mapped in decades when it ran aground.

All 75 people aboard were successfully rescued from the vessel as it began listing off the coast of the Samoan island Upolu exactly a year ago.”

    Watch: Manawanui sinking.
