Pete Hegseth Defends Gender-Neutral Physical Standards for Combat Roles

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated in recent remarks that, while there is no intention to prevent women from serving in the armed forces —“we greatly value the impact of female troops” and “our officers and non-commissioned officers are the best in the world”— combat jobs that require physical strength must be governed by high, gender-neutral standards.

Hegseth argued that “if women make it, excellent. If not, it is what it is,” adding that if this means no woman qualifies for certain combat positions, “so be it,” clarifying that such an outcome is not the goal but could be the result. He also stressed that the same rules would ensure that “weak men won’t qualify,” because “this is combat. This is life or death.”

The Secretary of Defense defended the need to rely on the physical capability of one’s comrade in battle: “To be an effective and lethal fighting force, you must trust that the warrior at your side in battle is capable, truly physically capable of doing what is necessary under fire.” For Hegseth, that level of demand is “the only standard you would want for your sons and your grandsons.”

To conclude, he recommended applying what he called the “War Department’s Golden Rule,” along with historical physical tests such as the 1990 standard and the so-called E6 test, as reliable formulas to maintain rigorous selection criteria.

Hegseth’s statements reignite the public debate over balancing equal opportunity with operational requirements in the armed forces, a subject that divides opinions between those who prioritize inclusion and those who emphasize the specific physical readiness needed for combat roles.
