For many people, the hardest part of the working world is the personal interactions. Networking and meetings can be exhausting, particularly if you’re an introvert. If small talk is a form of torture and you walk away drained after interacting with others, there are plenty of small-business ideas that might be well-suited for you.

A growing number of businesses can operate electronically and remotely, and there are several opportunities for entrepreneurs who would prefer to bypass a crowded office and lots of meetings.

Here’s a look at some businesses that are well-suited for introverts. (For more inspiration, read Inc.’s full guide to 25 small-business ideas for 2026.)

    Build online courses

Real-world experience in any number of fields can be the bedrock of an online education business. The e-learning market reached $314 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow to $615 billion by 2029.

To launch yours, you’ll need to find a niche that’s not overcrowded. By offering insight about specialized skills, you’re more likely to attract paying clients than by being a generalist. Your content should be both informative and interesting, with video lessons, downloadable resources, and quizzes. Platforms to consider include Etsy, Skillshare, Udemy, Teachable, and Kajabi.

And by focusing on online content, you’ll sidestep having to speak to large groups of people.

    AI tools and consulting

A growing number of companies want to use AI as part of their operations but don’t know how to go about doing so. If you’ve mastered the ins and outs of AI beyond writing prompts, that could open a significant consulting practice for you.

“The demand is real, and the data backs it up,” says Simon Worsfold, head of data communications at Intuit QuickBooks, which puts out a monthly small-business index exploring market trends. “More than three-quarters of businesses already using AI report higher productivity, yet most are still applying it to a narrow set of tasks. What is emerging is a large, underserved layer of advisory, implementation, and training services that small businesses need to scale their use of AI.”

    Remote bookkeeping

There’s an increased demand for outsourced financial assistance, especially from solopreneurs, meaning you can do the work remotely and avoid extended interactions with others. Much of the correspondence can be done via email, as you help startups handle necessities such as payroll and tax compliance.

You’ll need the right certification for this to be a lucrative business, of course. Consider serving a niche or specialty market by demonstrating a thorough knowledge of applicable regulations and best practices. Census Bureau data shows the finance and insurance sectors have the best projected performance for at least the next six months for remote financial workers, notably exceeding the national business average.

To find initial clients, scan through LinkedIn or sites like Paro.ai.

    App developer

Demand for software developers, including mobile app makers, is expected to grow 15% by 2034, which is much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rise of AI and vibe coding can also open up this field to people whose coding skills aren’t expert but who still have good ideas for applications.

Another benefit? App creation can be done as a solo (or small group) project, letting you build functionality tools or entertainment in a comfortable environment so they can generate passive income as you work on your next offering.

    Graphic design/video editing

Whether you have a creative streak or are skilled at condensing a long video recording to a captivating sizzle reel, there is growing demand for these types of business services. Independent artists and accomplished editors are in regular demand for everything from assisting with marketing campaigns to enhancing a company’s social-media presence. AI tools like Veed.IO or Runway can help you trim and color-correct videos, rearrange scenes, remove background noise, and create subtitles. And all of this can be accomplished in a quiet environment, where you are largely (or completely) working alone.
